Love In Your Eyes

"Love in Your Eyes" is a soulful experience that incorporates dynamic melodies with serval instances of the whole tone scale. While composing, I had recently begun learning Jazz Theory. I challenged myself to explore many ways of shifting the tonal center, taking inspiration from jazz ballads. During this performance, I used a MalletKAT to capture midi to create a visual score.

Starstruck

In April 2020, I took my first leap into 3D software. With inspiration from AniMusic’s “Pipe Dream”, I sought to create a marimba visual. As a tribute to a childhood favorite, I improvised “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. My goals were to imply the melody, while also projecting my own voice and lyrical ideas.

Project Melissa

Project Melissa: Practicing marimba skills at home was a challenge. Bringing home a school-owned instrument is usually not an option. My drive to fulfill this void inspired me to build my own. Overall, it was a very humbling and informative experience. While learning to tune marimba bars, I developed a greater appreciation for nature and the study of acoustics. Among the bars, I experimented beyond the normal frame. I repurposed a standing desk frame to implement automated height adjustments. This also came with the perk of having height preset via the control panel. Aluminum structs were used for the bar supports to provide modularity. The instrument could easily go from 5 octaves to 3 for smaller setups. It also breaks apart into smaller pieces, which is great for traveling.

The finished marimba (minus the resonators) was used in the adjacent video performance of my orignal composition entitled "Motherly Love".
